10 top resolutions for the modern man/woman – and how to keep them!

With Christmas and New Year done and dusted, many of us kick January off feeling full up but focused on our resolutions for 2019. If you were too busy celebrating over the festive period to set personal goals, now’s a great time to get working on some.

Make, don’t break

As is often the case, people begin to lose motivation as the year goes on; focus fizzles and come March, those goals are almost a distant memory. However, there are some tried-and-tested tricks for sticking to your resolutions, from celebrating every mini milestone, to sharing your pledges with others.

Need some inspiration? Here are some resolution ideas for the next 12 months – and some tips to help you achieve them:

1. One Year, No Beer

If you overdid it on Baileys and bubbly over Christmas, try giving up booze – your liver will love you for it.
Signing up to something like the One Year, No Beer (OYNB) challenge, where you receive daily emails and join a members’ forum, can help you to stay motivated. Don’t worry, it doesn’t have to be a whole year; OYNB offers motivating packages for 30 and 90 days as well as the big 365!

2. Random acts of kindness

Do good and feel great by carrying out one random act of kindness every day. This could involve driving an elderly neighbour to the shops, holding the door open for a stranger, or paying a much-deserved compliment to someone at work or home.

3. Mindfulness

Make time to practice ‘mindfulness’: the state of being fully aware of the present moment. Whether you do this through meditation (using an app like Headspace) or other training, just 10 minutes of mindfulness can bring benefits like reduced stress and improved wellbeing.

4. Work/life balance

If work got in the way of family time last year, look to restore that golden balance. Start by asking yourself, what needs to change? Is it simply a case of altering your approach to work, or is it time to search for a less-demanding job?

5. Get out more

There’s no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothes! The great outdoors makes us happy, less stressed and can even fight off illness. Don’t let the dark put you off, either; light up those winter nights using one of GP’s beam torches.

6. Do more for the environment

Ramp up efforts to protect our planet, whether that’s by swapping four wheels for two on your daily commute, switching to a renewable energy supplier or buying rechargeable batteries, which can be boosted hundreds of times.

7.  See more of the world

Just because you have a mortgage and other commitments doesn’t mean you can’t see more of the world. If you don’t want to jump on a plane, how about the UK? With its thriving cities, abundant natural landscapes and expansive coastline, it’s a dream destination really close to home!

8. Be more organised

Make 2018 the year you get more organised. There are plenty of gadgets that can help you to do this – take the GP Charge AnyWay, a two-in-one device that gives you a constant stream of rechargeable batteries and doubles up as a PowerBank to boost your USB-devices, so you never run out of juice when you need it most.

9. Get fit

If ramping up your exercise regime is a priority in 2018, setting a fitness goal – like running a 10k for charity – can help you to stick at it. Pair up with your partner or a friend and you can both support and motivate one another. And if you’re using your phone for running apps or listening to music on the move, don’t forget a GP portable mobile charger to keep you topped up!

10. Sleep more

Sleep deprivation is detrimental to our health, so try to get some shut-eye for the recommended eight hours each night. If you struggle switching off, unwind with a hot bath, good book, podcast or one of many sleep apps available, such as Sleep Cycle.
